Hydropower is the process of generating electricity using water power. The term derives from the Greek word "hydros", which means water. It's one of the oldest forms of energy used to generate electricity.

History Of Hydropower

Hydropower is a renewable energy source that has been used for hundreds of years. Water wheels were invented around 3000 BC, and since then, many different designs have been used to generate electricity.

Hydropower has been used to generate electricity since the 1800s. This was introduced in England around 1815, and in America in 1820. Since then, many countries have been building power stations that rely on water power.

The first known use of hydropower was in 1837 by James Blyth, a Scottish engineer. Blyth built a water wheel that generated enough power to operate a small steam engine. In 1842, he built a larger water wheel that was capable of powering a generator. His work made hydropower more practical for use in generating electricity.

In the late 1800s, hydropower became popular for large-scale electricity generation. For example, in 1882, a hydroelectric power plant was built in Niagara Falls, New York. This plant is still operational and generates over 2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year. Other large-scale hydroelectric plants include the Hoover Dam and the Grand Coulee Dam. The United States has the most hydroelectric power plants of any country in the world. 

During the early 1900s, engineers developed more efficient designs to harness the power of falling water. These included the Pelton wheel, which is similar to a water wheel but uses a series of curved paddles instead of buckets to turn a generator.

Today, hydropower is the second most widely used source of 6.3% of US renewable energy generation and 31.5% of total utility-scale renewable electricity generation according to the US Energy Information Administration.

According to the International Energy Agency, hydropower contributes to around 17% of the total electricity produced worldwide.

Hydropower is now the second largest source of renewable energy in the U.S. It provides enough electricity to power nearly 17 million homes. 

Over time, primarily as a result of increases in energy production from other sources like wind turbines, solar energy, coal, and natural gas, hydroelectricity's proportion of total U.S. electricity generation has fallen. 

Types of Hydropower Systems


There are many different types of hydropower systems that can be used to generate power. The most common types of hydropower are run-of-river, dam-based, and pumped storage.

Run-Of-The-River Hydropower

Run-of-the-river hydropower uses the natural flow of water to turn turbines and create electricity. Run-of-river hydropower is a renewable energy source because it doesn’t require the construction of a dam. It’s also more environmentally friendly than other types of hydropower because it doesn’t destroy or damage the environment.

Run-of-the-river hydropower plants don't require storage. Instead, they use the power of moving water. Water moves from one elevation to another through pipes. Power is generated by the difference in elevation between the upper pipe and the lower pipe. Pumps increase or decrease the height of the water in the lower pipe. A turbine is then used to convert the kinetic energy of the moving water into electrical energy.


Reservoir Or Dam-Based Hydropower

Reservoir or Dam-based hydropower requires the construction of a dam to harness the flow of water. The dam creates a reservoir that stores water. Water is then released from the reservoir through turbines that spin and create electricity. 

Reservoirs are either natural (such as the Great Lakes) or man-made (like Lake Powell, which was constructed in the 1950s).

The water in a reservoir usually rises during heavy rains. During those periods, the water level in the reservoir can increase significantly. The level of the water in a reservoir, however, cannot exceed a certain level. If the reservoir gets too full, its water could overflow and cause flooding. Water from a reservoir may move through a tunnel to a turbine, which generates electricity.

Plants rely on stored water in a reservoir, while others are powered by moving water. The world's biggest reservoir is Lake Mead which is found in the United States and is bigger than England's Lake Windermere. This massive lake is used for irrigation but is also useful for producing hydroelectricity.

Pumped Storage Hydropower

Pumped storage hydropower is similar to run-of-river hydropower, but it uses electricity instead of water to create power. It uses a dam to store a certain amount of water. Then the water is released to drive turbines that produce electricity.

This advantage is that it can supply power for long periods when demand exceeds supply. This plant has two reservoirs, one high up and one low down. When water is being drawn down at a low level, the water in the high reservoir is allowed to flow back. This makes it possible to generate electricity when needed. This type of plant is used to stabilize the grid by storing energy in excess during daylight hours.

Pumped storage hydropower is used in conjunction with other types of energy sources, such as solar power. 

Benefits of Using Hydropower

There are many benefits of using hydropower. Some of them are as under:

• Hydropower is a great source of energy. It’s a clean, renewable resource that provides a reliable source of energy.
• Hydropower is a clean, renewable source of energy that produces no carbon dioxide emissions. It's an environmentally friendly form of energy that provides reliable electricity to homes and businesses and factories.
• Hydropower produces electricity without the use of fossil fuels. It also does not produce harmful emissions.
• Hydropower is not only used to generate electricity but can be used to cool buildings and produce steam for heating.


In conclusion, hydropower is a renewable energy source that produces electricity without burning any fossil fuels. It is a clean, environmentally friendly form of energy, and it provides a reliable supply of electricity to homes and businesses around the world.  It can be used to power homes, businesses, and industries. Hydroelectric power plants can be built in a variety of places, including rivers, lakes, and reservoirs.

However, hydropower isn't used everywhere, though. Some regions do not have the suitable geography or climate to have hydroelectricity projects. Therefore, hydropower cannot be used for every region.
